Past Distinguished Citizen Award Honorees for 2003
Alton
Plumb, Jr.
- Al is President of Alpco Recycling, Inc. of Macedon.
He has been a long time member of the executive board and is currently an
advisory board member of the Finger Lakes Council and grew up in Scouting as a
member of Troop 166 in Macedon.
Al is Past Master of the Macedon Masonic Lodge, which he held at the young age
of 25. He's a past fireman with the
Macedon Center Fire Department. He held vice president positions with the
Macedon Lions Club and the Macedon BNI (Business Networking) Chapter. He served as president of St. John's Lutheran Church in
Pumpkin Hook. He is a past member
of the Macedon Chamber of Commerce and the Wayne County Business Council.
Al has personally sponsored 35 Asian Refugee families in the early 1980s.
He is active with and supports the Pines of Peace Hospice Home and many
other charitable causes.
Al and his wife, Jan, have two children and live in Macedon.
Al and his late wife, Sherry, have two grown children and two grand
children.
James
J. Dooley
- Jim is currently President and CEO of Finger Lakes Health.
He is a former Youthpower Dinner chairman and has been a long time
supporter of the Boy Scouts.
Jim has held leadership positions with health care organizations
including President & CEO of Geneva Regional Health System and Geneva
General & Taylor-Brown Memorial Hospitals;
Administrator of Geneva General Hospital; VP of Administration at Robert
Packer Hospital in Sayre, PA. He
has served on boards of the Rochester Regional Healthcare Association, RRHA
Joint Ventures Corporation, VHA Empire State, Healthcare Association of New York
State, Healthcare Financial Management Association, American Hospital
Association Regional Policy Board 2.
His community involvement includes board member of Catholic Charities, Geneva
Area Chamber of Commerce, Jobs for Geneva, Geneva Youth Hockey, and the Geneva
YMCA. He continues to coach youth hockey and was head hockey coach of the
Geneva/DeSales High Schools.
Jim was recognized as 'Coach of the Year' twice by Monroe County High School
Hockey League; received the 'Youth Role Model Award' from the Geneva Boys and
Girls Club and awarded the 'Sharing the Light Award' by Catholic Charities of
the Finger Lakes.
Jim and his wife, Caryl live in Geneva and they have two grown children.
Neil
Marvin
- Neil was a long time board member of the Finger Lakes Council and
served as president.
He is credited with playing a major role in establishing the Youthpower
Dinner, originally known as Order of Angels. His involvement with the
Finger Lakes Council included chairmanship of program and camping committees,
board membership and council president for three years.
His claim to fame was a record-setting Finger Lakes Council Camporee held
on the campus of Hobart College.
Neil owned and operated a dairy store in Geneva. He also was a development
officer of Geneva General Hospital.
Neil was a President and co-founder of Rotary Camp Onseyawa, a camp for
physically and mentally challenged youth.
Camp Onseyawa continues to flourish today serving challenged youth from
the four counties for two weeks each summer at Finger Lakes Council's Camp
Babcock-Hovey in Ovid. He also was instrumental in starting other camps for
physically and mentally challenged youth in the Elmira and Rochester areas.
Neil also served as Rotary president and District Governor.
Neil and his wife Connie currently reside in Talahasse Florida.
Helen
& Arnold Barben
- Arnold ('Barb') Barben was deeply involved in supporting Scouting
throughout his life. As a Colonel in the US Army, he built pipelines in Burma
during World War II.
He served as plant manager at Goulds Pumps. Arnold was active in numerous
community organizations throughout the Seneca Falls Area. He served as president
and board member of the Finger Lakes Council for several years, and had a
significant impact on its well being. He started Boy Scout Troop 80 in 1932,
staying registered for the remainder of his life.
In 1948 he was awarded the Silver Beaver, the highest award a Boy Scout
Council can bestow.
Both Helen and Arnold have always supported the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. They
have always been avid bird watchers, often competing to see who could see or
hear the most species.
Helen continues to have a most distinguished lifetime of service. She is
a retired Mynderse Academy music teacher.
Her volunteer work has been outstanding including the Seneca Falls
Historical Society, Catholic Charities of the Finger Lakes, Girl Scouts,
National Women's Hall of Fame, Senior Citizens groups, Methodist Church organist
and choir director, Clarkson University Scholarship Fund.
Helen has been awarded Catholic Charities 'Sharing the Light Award",
National Women's Hall of Fame's 'Convention Days Award',
National Organization of Women's "Unsung Heroine Award',
'Outstanding Senior Citizen for Seneca County' Award, Girl Scout Awards,
and recognized by Mike Nozzolio for 'Outstanding Service to Seneca County'
